One of the most powerful ways to experience change is by finding new relationships with problems. Many difficult things in life do not disappear, for example, grief and loss, interpersonal conflicts, and health concerns; however, changing how we relate to these issues can lead to transformative experiences. As a therapist, Sumana is eager to walk alongside others as they discover paths forward. She is particularly excited to work with people 13 years old and up who are interested in engaging in collaborative, curious conversations in which to explore relationships - with themselves, with others, and with ideas. She views her primary role in the therapeutic relationship as that of coauthor rather than teacher, and she enjoys working with folks who are interested in finding their own approaches to problems with support from their communities, which may not look "cookie cutter."
Sumana prioritizes building relationships with the people she works with. She takes care in getting to know those she works with outside of the problems that bring them to therapy. Playfulness, humor, and curiosity are foundational in her work. Guided by a narrative perspective, her goal is not to tell people what to do but instead to ask questions that prompt self-exploration. Sumana is also trained in treating trauma through EMDR and looks for ways to integrate healing into each persons story.
